Blog 104: Whats in a name!!

Exactly whats so difficult abt my name??
Simple as anything ...how difficult is it to pronounce s-u-n-n-y?? Do ppl never watch weather forecasts?? never follow cricket to the any significant detail??
Or maybe i shudnt generalize it to 'ppl'...maybe i shud just say 'profs'!!

Right from the first year, 9 out of 10 profs have makhaoed when saying my name. Its always 'Sunni' for them X-(.
It began with the chemistry prof...bang in the middle of raman audi, his holiness calls out 'Sunni Somani'. The said 'Sunni Somani' took the pain to bring to the prof's notice the slight deviation from actuality and pronounced his name in the most clear-cut manner that he had ever done.
The prof was a nice guy and said in very apologetic manner that he would take note next time onwards. The only problem was...next class, it was 'Sunni' again :(.

That opened the floodgates...
the mech prof, comp lab prof, all the rassas who took tutes, maths prof...cut a long story short...almost every prof i can think of who has taught me apart from Prof RBC somehow managed to begin with 'Sunni'.

Not to mention the fact that many of my elderly relatives recoil in shock when they first hear my name!! To them...its 'Shani' :((.
Then there's a tedious and yeah-its-hard-to-believe-but-this-is-the-truth explanation of how my name is not quite what they think. Anyways, many of them still believe that my name is the biggest blunder of my life! I once went to a person's house during summer with my dad...had a cold at that time and i guess i wasnt the most animated object on earth after the journey ...anyways...that gentleman confided in my dad that my torpor was a direct consequence of my name!!

There's a story actually abt how my name came to be Sunny. My mom wanted this to be my pet name and so while my 'name' was still being proposed and vetoed in the family, my petname was fixed:D. One fine day, my uncle had to give in some paperwork which needed my name; ergo, my dad asseverated...'Thou shalt be known as...(thunder and lightning)...Sunny'.:D
Never doubt the power of the written word. At least dont doubt its power to name sum1!!

If that wasnt enuf, lets move onto my surname. I understand that the Asian tsunami made a deep impact on the life and minds of ppl...blah blah...but hell i bet no one thought it would take my surname as a victim. January first week, Vikramshila, Marketing Management class, I got my ultimate name remix ever...sunni tsunami!!!

Anyways...chalta hai. Another day...another prof...another attendance call...same mistake!!

Rmemeber W.H.Auden's poem - The Unknown Citizen?? In my opinion, authorities (read: profs) calling students by their roll numbers isnt such a bad thing at all!!

Hey, just realised that all the Profs. used to like my name. "Hari Radhe Shyam". Intro. lectures during the star of every sem. included the history behind the coinage of my name. But I used to hate some B****li profs. As u said like the tsunami stuff,They used to prounonce my name as "Hodi Dade syam"...(that suckss!!Isn't it?)so I too feel "whats there in a name!!!""
