Blog 3602: Saturday Night Movie

Me and Bhraate made a late night snack out of American Gangster tonight. Nice film. Well portrayed. Denzel Washington does his role well. Two and half hours, 160 bucks, third row ticket and a ride back at 1.30 am means that this was a Saturday night that qualifies as an answer for Monday morning's escape-it-if-you-can question "So how was your weekend?".

Anyhoo, my point is rather different. What I came out of E-Square wondering was whether at all Russel Crowe was needed for this role. Of course, I aint the heir-apparent to Steven Spielberg... but even to my untrained cinematographic perception, twas but obvious that this was a role a lesser actor could have easily done.

So I wonder, why Russel Crowe? The only scenes of note for him in the movie, to me, were those he shot with Denzel Washington around the end of the movie with the styrofoam coffee cup being shoved in "pehle aap, pehle aap" fashion across the interrogation table. The point where he puts it across to the drug lord what he will have done and how the script shall unfold from there on.

Not much else.

And so I wonder, why Russel Crowe?

Just so that people would be drawn to watch Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe in action together? Coz the economics probably said that the amount to be paid to Russel Crowe would be recovered twice over when the two names are seen together?

Why is it that before every Hindi film, the bloody dumb Page 3 screams about what a path breaking project Tusshhaarr (pardon me, I know not which alphabets to repeat how many times) Kapoor, or some such of his ilk, is doing with a debut-today-gone-tomorrow director? And then we have the director say how much Tuushaarrr (trying another variation; I hope one of them may be right) has grown as an actor and as a man during this film. And then, Tuu.. (you-know-who) says what a wonder-funkey director this guy is. And we all go happily slapping each other's back until the film's out and everyone in the first show is left wondering why they hadnt insured their time and ticket money before buying it.

Anyhoo...

On a different plane of metaphysical thought, I had some awesome popcorn today. You must have had the classic salted, tomato and chilli versions of popcorn... but damn... try the sweet version someday. The popcorn's crisp, its sweet layer's crisp too and it forms a quick assembly line using your fingers and the whole gastronomical system.

Anyhoo...

One of these days, I should go meet Faggy. We keep making plans and keep kaatafying them and keep branding the other Mr Ditcher. Its amazing. For the last one month, Me and Himadri living in North West Pune, Faggy in South East Pune and Maalu in North East Pune havent seen each other. And they say Pune's a small city. What have we made out of ourselves? What lifestyle is this? Have we become slaves to these multinationals? Why am I talking like Mamta Bannerjee?

Anyhoo...

Sunday today. A look at Orkut says "Today's fortune: A thrilling time is in your immediate future".

Yeah right. Why does this remind me of those Page 3 reviews? [;-)]
